Day 5 - St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museum, and the Sistene Chapel

Today, we started out by going to St. Peter's Basilica. You really have no concept of how big this is until you're standing there.

We got there early around 9am and the line wasn't too bad. Not long after we got there, the line wrapped almost all the way around the the piazza. I was surprised at how quickly though the line moved. I got some pictures inside with my DSLR but it didn't take long and you were overwhelmed by all the things you could photograph. We'll see what turns out.

The inside of the basilica is absolutely huge. Our guide said you could fit 3 St. Patrick's Cathedrals from New York City inside St. Peter's. Regardless of your religious views, it is both an engineering marvel and and an artistic wonder.

We got back to the hotel around 12:30 and we then had off until 5pm. Nancy and Barb wanted to lay down and rest so Mitch and I walked and found a little ristorante and had a sandwich and a beer. Then we decided it was time for a siesta ourselves. :-)

At 5pm, we came down for a buffet dinner prepared at the hotel just for our tour.

We've made some great friends and ate with them again tonight.

But the highlight of the day was after dinner. We went to the Vatican Museum and the Sistene Chapel where we had an after hours, private tour. There were 3 different tours from Tauck in town and we all met for this private tour. So instead of going during the day with approximately 30,000 other visitors, we got to go in after hours with about 100 people! It was amazing.

There pictures don't do it justice but I took a couple with my iphone along the way. I hope my DSLR pictures turn out.

From the Sistene Chapel:

Tomorrow we go to the Colosseum and then have the afternoon and evening to explore Rome on our own.

Until them... Ciao!
