Day 1 - Travel to Sorrento

Boun giorno from Italy! The short story is we made it pretty much on schedule which is a little surprising since the weather was not good in Detroit. The night before we left, the weather was predicting 100% chance of thunderstorms in Grand Rapids when we were scheduled to leave and 90% chance in Detroit. It turned out that the weather didn't really materialize in GR but it did in Detroit.

We got to the airport in Grand Rapids in plenty of time. Barb and Nancy were looking ready to go. We actually left Grand Rapids a little early which I have rarely seen in all the many times I've flown before. We got to Detroit which had a very low cloud ceiling - less than 1,000 feet - and lots of rain but no lightning. Our flight from Detroit to Rome was still on time.

Nancy and I were happy about that! Many planes were being held up leaving Detroit according to our pilot but they let us go and 8.5 hours later, we landed in Rome! Even in Economy Comfort seats, there was still no sleeping. Ugh. It was a long night. But we made it for which we were all grateful.

Then we had to catch a short flight from Rome to Naples which was followed by a 1.5 hour van ride down to Sorrento and our hotel, the Excelsior Vittoria which is right on the Mediterranean Sea! Here is the view from our hotel room window.

We were all very tired after 16 hours of travel but stayed up as is recommended the day you arrive. We had dinner in a little restaurant around the corner from the hotel and had gelato down by pier you see in the picture above. We crashed at about 7pm.

We came a day early before our tour to get over the jet lag and are we glad we did. We have the day today to explore. We might take a ferry to Capri. Our tour starts tonight with a welcome dinner at 6:30pm. We feel much better today after getting some sleep so we'll be able to enjoy the time tonight.

Till next time... Ciao!
